B.S. Degree with a Major in Environmental Geosciences (Geospatial Technology and Urban Planning option)

  • Total Credit Hours: 120

About This Program

As a student in the Geospatial Technology and Urban Planning option, you will study the challenges facing urban, regional, and environmental planners. Topics include geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, urban planning theories, geospatial data analysis, and practices for mapping, analyzing, and improving the urban environment. You will also learn about resource management and allocation in urban settings, and political policy as it relates to regional and urban planning. Students with knowledge of geospatial technology and urban planning are in high demand due to the growing job market in these fields. This option prepares you for careers in urban planning, geospatial technology, and resource management.

The Valdosta State Difference

Our students share a passion for studying the environment and how we can sustainably interact with it. You will work closely with faculty mentors in a student-focused, supportive, and caring environment. We design your degree program to be flexible to accommodate individual interests (e.g., environmental sustainability, and the physical science of climate change). Every student can conduct research with a faculty mentor with the intention of the research leading to an undergraduate thesis and formal presentations.

What You'll Learn

The fields of geospatial technology and urban planning present solutions to many of the urgent problems associated with environmental sustainability and regional planning. Geospatial technologies help to understand spaces, monitor changes and patterns in landscapes, urban areas, and even societies. Geospatial technology is important for urban planning. Planners use geographic information systems (GIS) and data analysis skills to address issues for government and professional agencies. These include mapping land use, wildlife habitats, and public health. Our faculty share their knowledge with you so that you learn theory in the classroom then apply it in labs and the field.

Cost and Length of Program

Students meeting pre-requisites for first-year courses can graduate within four years with a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Environmental Geosciences, Geospatial Technology and Urban Planning option.
